Women Empowered

Why Learn Self-Defense?

Sexual assault is a primary fear for women. Yet few ever learn how to defend themselves. Why? We believe it is because this is a thought so scary, even the smartest of women try and convince themselves, "It will never happen to me", or “If I don’t think about it, this won’t happen to me.”

That fear can be mentally paralyzing to the point where women don't learn self-defense because they are afraid of even thinking about the possibilities. Eve knows this because she once thought this way too. She was misinformed on the realities of sexual assault and let her doubts rule her decision making.  However, her hopes that it could never happen to her diminished every time she learned another woman close to her was a survivor of sexual assault. When she learned the alarming statistic that one in four women between the ages of 14 and 24 have been sexually assaulted, she knew she couldn’t leave it up to chance. Now Eve wants to share with others the positive transformation that took place in her life after educating herself via the Women Empowered program.  Empowered by knowledge and physical techniques, she realized that an attack is not a hopeless scenario for women who have the foundation and blueprint for survival and victory. This was her "missing link" to total empowerment.

“As women, how can we feel 100% confident in our careers, relationships, and lifestyle choices when we experience a fundamental fear for our safety on a daily basis? The Women Empowered program will alleviate this fear so that our confidence has no limitations.” – Eve Torres
The Philosophy

Self-defense begins long before the fight gets physical. Your first and most important line of defense is a heightened sense of awareness. Women Empowered teaches you the most common strategies used by both strangers and non-stranger assailants so you can prevent attacks before they happen. The reality is, no matter how diligently you practice awareness and avoidance techniques, someone might slip through your defenses and attack you.  Regardless of your age or physical condition, you CAN and must defend yourself, and the Women Empowered program will give you the tools and the confidence to make it happen.
The Program Components

Taught by third generation Jiu-Jitsu masters Ralek, Rener, and Ryron Gracie, and assistant instructors Sage Gracie and Eve Torres, the Women Empowered program consists of 15 lessons – 10 Core Lessons and 5 Advanced Lessons. To ensure that your at-home learning experience emulates the live training students receive at the Gracie Academy Headquarters in Torrance, CA, they present the Women Empowered lessons on DVD in precisely the same format that you would experience if you were to receive private lessons from a Gracie Academy instructor. Each lesson features a series of simplified drills or “Slices,” along with a Reflex Development Drill designed to help you achieve muscle memory.  They also spend time in each lesson discussing the guiding principles of the techniques so you can modify and adapt them to the specific circumstances of any situation you may find yourself in.
Women Empowered Seminars

Eve Torres and the Gracie Brothers offer Women Empowered seminars to college campuses, military bases, high schools, and corporations looking to educate women on how to stay safe and defend against worst-case sexual assault scenarios.  The most effective approach to safety is a heightened awareness to prevent attacks before they happen. They discuss the awareness principles and essential street-smart reminders that will minimize the chances of a woman ever becoming a target.  However, when an attack can not be avoided, women must be equipped with defensive tactics and physical techniques that will enable us to defeat an assailant regardless of our size difference.

What makes these seminars different from other safety/self-defense courses is that it is effective for all women, and it is the only self-defense program that examines the Four Phases of a sexual assault for both stranger, and “non-stranger” predators and addresses the defensive strategies for each of these phases.  They discuss and teach fundamental self-defense principals that are essential for survival for any attack, because no two assaults will be exactly the same.

The Women Empowered program is presented in both keynote presentation format (for large groups) and interactive self-defense seminars.

Women Empowered Interactive Self-Defense Seminars

The Core Program

An interactive seminar in which participants will learn how to defend against the most common attacks on women.  These scenarios include control holds, wrist grabs, chokeholds, and bear hugs, and we teach verbal assertiveness to establish and enforce personal boundaries.  What makes this seminar different from other self-defense workshops is the identification of the Four Phases of Sexual Assault, and the unique defensive strategies for the different phases of an attack.

The program will cover essential awareness principles, street smart reminders, and the critical psychology that will enable women to avoid panic and escape from an attacker who has pinned her to the ground. In this course they also address defensive strategies in the event of a non-stranger sexual assault, or “undercover assailant”, where the attacker may be a colleague, friend, relative, or other acquaintance.

Founded on the principles of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the techniques are based on leverage and timing, eliminating their dependence on physical strength, coordination, age, or flexibility.  This program is truly designed for all women, and no martial arts experience is necessary.

Depending on the amount of time allotted for training, the length of the Core Program seminar can be customized to include anywhere from the three most important techniques to all ten Core Lessons (90 minutes – 8 hrs).

The Core Plus Program

This 12 hour (2-3 day) interactive seminar covers mastering the 10 Core Lessons, plus five bonus Women Empowered Advanced Lessons not covered in the Core Program. In the Advanced Lessons, they teach the participants how to defend against less likely, but equally frightening, attacks.  These include sudden attacks from behind, hair grabs, and defending against a predator armed with a gun or knife.
