“One in six women in the United States will experience rape or attempted rape in her lifetime.”
As a professional, traveling woman, I have not only personally experienced the fears of this reality, I have witnessed women close to me suffer the life-long effects of sexual violence without the support they needed. 60% of sexual assaults go unreported, meaning most survivors never receive the medical help, counseling, or law enforcement support necessary to overcome such a traumatic event. Victims who do not receive help are more likely to suffer from depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and even suicide.
I believe every survivor needs to know that, regardless of the circumstances, they are not at fault, and there are people and resources available to help them. This is why I am a strong supporter of RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network), the nation's largest Anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN provides free, safe, and confidential support to victims through the National Sexual Assault Telephone and Online Hotlines. RAINN is also a leading force in public policy initiatives concerning sexual assault. Their efforts to ensure that offenders are brought to justice has helped reduce the rate of sexual violence in America. I ask that you join me in supporting RAINN by making a small (or large) donation through my RAINNmaker page. All money donated to RAINN will go towards helping victims, educating the public, and improving public policy.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy a safe and happy life. While RAINN helps ensure that survivors have the resources to liberate themselves from their traumatic experiences, it is essential that all women educate themselves about what they can do to reduce their risks of becoming a victim. Whether you are a woman who wants to minimize her risk of being targeted, or you are a survivor who wants to regain control of her life, visit the Women Empowered page and see what steps you can take to unleash the power within!
